Police Chief Terence M. Delehanty

Terence Delehanty currently serves as Police Chief for the Winthrop, Massachusetts Police Department and has held that position since September 2009. He was originally appointed as a Reserve Officer for the Winthrop Police Department in November 2005 and was subsequently promoted through the ranks of Sergeant (2003), Lieutenant (2007) and served as the department’s first Assistant Chief (2007), a role which is now referred to as Deputy Chief.  

Chief Delehanty holds an Associates Degree from North Shore Community College, a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Massachusetts (1995), and a Juris Doctorate Degree from the Massachusetts School of Law (2000). Chief Delehanty is a Licensed Attorney in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar since June 2000.   

Chief Delehanty has also attended numerous professional development certification programs including Public Safety Leadership & Management from Suffolk University Center for Public Management (2010), the FBI National Academy (2012), and Chief Delehanty frequently attends the International Association of Police Conferences as well as the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Conference and Training.  

He is currently a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police, the Legislative Committee for the Massachusetts Police Association, a Board Member of the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS), and a member of the Association of Workplace Investigators.  He is also certified by the Massachusetts Commission of Discrimination as a workplace investigator and trainer. Chief Delehanty also serves as a certified Municipal Police Training Council instructor and instructs various supervisory, criminal law, and procedure classes in several academies around the state.
